Escapes--Real or Imaginary

Sometimes we want to get away. This might be a real, physical escape, like the lovely cabin that I once visited over spring break, or it might be an imaginary one, providing some emotional respite in times of turmoil.

Often the easiest way to accomplish an escape is through fiction. We can quickly immerse ourselves in other worlds, other realities, separating us from stress for a period of time.

Emily Dickinson once wrote "There is no frigate like a book/To take us lands away . . . " In this, Emily and I see eye to eye. The book is our vehicle, the ship that takes us into foreign waters, and sometimes I think we all want to go there.

Do you have a favorite escape, either a physical place or a book to which you return again and again?
