Dawn dolls were made by Topper between 1970 and 1973. There were many versions of this little doll (they were only about six inches tall), and I had one black-haired beauty when I was about six or seven years old. I've always remembered the doll; I have no idea what happened to my original toy, but thanks ot Ebay I found that there are all sorts of Dawn dolls still out there for the average nostalgia buff.
It wasn't only nostalgia that made me seek this doll, though. She has become a little symbol of my main character, Lilah Drake, whose adventures I have followed through two-and-a-half books (and counting) in the Undercover Dish series.
Lilah, like this sweet-faced doll, has long blonde hair which she wears in a braid so that it doesn't get in the way while she's cooking. Now when I'm writing a Lilah scene, I can look at the doll sitting nearby, a concrete reminder of a creative idea.
